Description
The tea bowl has a harmonic and elegant rounded shape with a small standring (early Joseon Dynasty, 15./16. Century). The inner walls are completely designed and marked by four different groups of motifs, each separated by two surrounding lines. There is a dense composition of flowers : seven chrysanthemums in the center; stylized lotos leaves placed in double layers on top of each other; a big rounded area of chrysanthemums; a small field of circles with dots. The patterns are designed in a popular technique. The motifs were painted or stamped to the leather-hard clay with a spreading white compound. This compound was of kaolin-containing clay mixed with water. Then the bowl included the bottom was glazed all around in grey-green color and went into the kiln. However, on the mouth is a small defect. On the lower back part and on the bottom of this object appear tiny air bubbles.
Already in the Goryeo Period tea-ceremonies took place at the Royal Court and in Buddhist temples. In the Joseon Dynasty they became one of the „Five National Rites“ (1474 AD). (HV)
